The right eating habits have a direct impact on your well-being. Whether you feel full of energy during the day and calm and balanced in the evening can depend to a certain extent on the right diet. Certain eating habits get on our nerves, many will think of fast food here. But there is a lot more to consider. We give you four tips on how you can change your diet for better sleep.

The right foods to eat at night

Hearty meals should be avoided before a good night's sleep, that much can already be revealed. The proverbial portion of knuckle of pork with dumplings puts a strain on the stomach. If your stomach is still busy digesting, it can keep you awake for a long time and affect your sleep. The last meal should be eaten 2-3 hours before going to sleep. Light meals are recommended for dinner, e.g. steamed vegetables or turkey breast. In addition to the hearty meals already mentioned, spicy foods should be avoided as they also stimulate digestion too much.

Avoid alcohol

A common misconception is that alcohol improves sleep. It is true that the relaxing effect of alcohol helps you fall asleep. In fact, alcohol reduces the quality of sleep, as the body sometimes wakes up prematurely due to the lack of alcohol. For a restful sleep, it is therefore advisable to avoid even small amounts of alcohol before falling asleep.

No stimulating drinks after 16:00

From late afternoon onwards, you should avoid drinks that can be very stimulating. These include soft drinks that contain caffeine - e.g. cola, mate or energy drinks - coffee, green or black tea. Towards the evening, it is advisable to drink still water, diluted fruit juices or herbal tea. Avoiding alcohol has already been mentioned in the previous point, but there is also another reason to avoid beer, for example, as beer stimulates bladder activity and causes further restlessness at night.

Avoid acidification of your body

Ideally, the human body is in an acid-base balance. Most people's diets are now such that the body is over-acidified. Other factors such as stress, lack of exercise or the consumption of alcohol and nicotine can further increase the body's acidity. The consequences of acidosis can include nervousness, restlessness or imbalance, all of which prevent you from having a good night's sleep. To avoid acidification of your body, it is advisable to consume certain foods only in moderation. These include meat and sausage products, fish, white flour and anything containing sugar. Vegetables, potatoes and non-carbonated water, among other things, counteract acidification of the body.
