Lichtblock Lenses Guide

Why different lenses in the first place?

Light accompanies us around the clock, but not all light affects us the same way. Especially artificial light differs significantly from natural daylight in composition, intensity and effect. Our everyday life is dynamic: sometimes we’re outside in changing weather, sometimes indoors in front of a screen, surrounded by ceiling lamps and LEDs. That’s why—especially during the day—you can’t simply say: Blueblocker glasses on or off – it depends on the specific light situation.

While the sunlight we need provides a balanced color spectrum and naturally changes over the day, artificial light is mostly static and often contains an excessive blue share that can negatively affect our circadian rhythm and sleep. It becomes even more critical when we encounter this light directly and intensely, e.g. via monitors or displays.

If you want to understand more deeply why blue light plays such a central role for our circadian rhythm, we recommend our info article: “What is blue light?

Our specially developed blue-light-filter glasses help you realign with your natural rhythm in today’s light environment. Because of the dynamic lighting conditions in everyday life, it’s not only sensible but essential to offer different lenses with tuned properties. Depending on time of day and environment, our three lens colors support you exactly where you need them—without restricting you in daily life. This way you’ll find the right support for every situation, whether at the office during the day, on the couch in the evening, or late at night.

The following section explains what distinguishes our three lens types and when each of them is used sensibly.

Because our light environment constantly changes—and every daily routine, every home and every screen time is individual—we need different lenses that fit the respective situations.

Our lenses at a glance

Work+Play (Yellow)

Daytime under artificial light – blocks approx. 85% blue light (400–455 nm)

Sleep (Orange)

Evening before bedtime – blocks 100% blue light up to 500 nm

Work+Play (Yellow)

Strong blue-light protection for the day without overly distorting colors.

Our Work+Play lenses are designed specifically for modern indoor environments—everywhere you’re surrounded by LED lighting, screens and other artificial light sources. They block 85% of blue light and selectively filter the often overrepresented and most energetic part of the spectrum (400–455 nm), which is frequently associated with digital eye strain, headaches and concentration issues.

The yellow lenses are not only protective but also mood-enhancing, especially in low-light interiors or on darker days. Perfect for people who spend a lot of time under artificial light.

Important: Our Work+Play glasses are not intended for use in bright daylight. With sufficient natural light you don’t need additional protection. On the contrary, daylight is essential for your circadian rhythm and well-being.

These lenses are a great choice if you regularly work under artificial light, spend long hours at screens, drive at night or are sensitive to artificial light and want reliable blue-light protection without heavy color distortion.

At a glance

  • Use: Daytime under artificial light, also for night driving
  • Blocks: approx. 85% blue light (400–455 nm)
  • Notable: Mood-enhancing in low-light rooms
  • Note: Not intended for strong daylight – sunlight remains important

Sleep (Orange)

Full blue-light protection for the evening to improve your sleep quality and protect your natural rhythm.

Our Sleep lenses are made to reliably protect you from artificial blue light from screens and LED lights from sunset onward. They block 100% of blue light up to 500 nanometers and help your body find its natural rhythm again in the evening.

After sunset, our homes are often dominated by artificial light. Whether ceiling lights, screens or mobile devices—this light contains a high proportion of blue light. It can signal to the brain that it’s still daytime. The result: the production of melatonin may be inhibited while the release of stress hormones like cortisol often rises. This can lead to inner restlessness, trouble falling asleep and overall poorer sleep.

Due to the orange tint, Sleep lenses change color perception a bit more than Work+Play, but remain everyday-friendly. So you can still enjoy a movie or use your phone in the evening without unnecessarily throwing off your internal clock.

Using Sleep glasses in the last two to three hours before bedtime can support melatonin production, make it easier to fall asleep and improve sleep quality. Sleep lenses are your daily companion in the evening when you’re still active but want to help your body wind down.

At a glance

  • Use: Evenings, about 2–3 hours before bedtime
  • Blocks: 100% blue light up to 500 nm
  • Notable: Everyday-friendly color perception despite the filter
  • Note: Not suitable for road traffic

Dark (Red)

Maximum protection from light stimuli for deep relaxation and restorative sleep

Our Dark lenses provide the strongest light protection in our range. They block not only 100% of blue light but also 70% of green light up to 550 nanometers.

Why green light as well? After sunset, humans were exposed to very little light for millennia. If any, it came from fire, which is warm, red-orange and free of cold, short-wavelength light. Our internal clock has adapted to these lighting conditions over thousands of years. Anything that deviates can disrupt the natural rhythm.

Modern light sources such as LED lamps, screens or fluorescent tubes emit large amounts of blue and green light—the very range of the spectrum our body does not expect at night. Dark glasses therefore filter not only blue but also a large portion of green light. What reaches your eyes is closer to natural firelight and signals to your body that it’s time to wind down.

Because of the deep-red lenses, color perception is strongly altered, but they offer the most intense protection in our collection. They are especially suitable for the late evening at home to quickly relax after a stressful day, or for situations where you can’t control ambient light—such as in bright airports, lively hotel lobbies or office buildings late at night.

Of course, our Sleep lenses already provide a very strong effect. They block 100% of blue light and reliably support your melatonin production and sleep. If you want to watch series or read on your smartphone in the evening while keeping a bit more color perception, Sleep is often the more comfortable choice. Dark adds protection against green light and is particularly suitable for light-sensitive people or for moments when you seek maximum recovery. Both lens types have their place—it depends on you, your needs and your evening environment.

At a glance

  • Use: Late evening & night or in strong light exposure
  • Blocks: 100% blue light + approx. 70% green light up to 550 nm
  • Notable: Strongest protection, similar to natural firelight
  • Note: Not suitable for road traffic
